Your evening adventure begins in Bocas del Toro, where you'll meet your local guide and board a boat for a nighttime journey into the archipelago.

Away from bright lights, the surrounding Caribbean water can reveal one of nature's most fascinating displays. When conditions are favorable, movement in the water triggers countless tiny flashes of blue-green light.

Depending on conditions and your guide's instructions, you'll have an opportunity to enter the warm Caribbean water. Move your hands or feet through the sea and watch the bioluminescent glow appear around you. On a dark, clear night, the combination of glowing water and the stars overhead can make this one of the most unusual experiences in Bocas del Toro.

Because bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon, its intensity varies from night to night and cannot be guaranteed.

What Causes Bioluminescence?

Marine bioluminescence is produced by microscopic organisms in the water, including certain types of plankton known as dinoflagellates. According to NOAA, bioluminescence is produced through a natural chemical reaction that allows living organisms to emit light. When some bioluminescent dinoflagellates are disturbed by movement in the water, they can produce brief flashes of light.

When large numbers of these organisms are present, swimming, splashing or the movement of a boat can create visible flashes throughout the water. The effect is easiest to see in dark surroundings with minimal competing light.
