TOUR OVERVIEW - Isla Grande Panama - Caribbean Island Hopping & Portobelo Fort

Your tour begins at either 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM, depending on your cruise ship’s arrival time. Your friendly, bilingual driver and guide will greet you at the Colón Cruise Ship Terminal, where you’ll step into a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for a scenic journey along Panama’s stunning Caribbean coast toward Isla Grande.

Upon arrival at the boat port, you’ll board a lancha boat that will whisk you to Isla Linton, home to vibrant wildlife and famous for its resident howler monkeys. As you step off the boat, their distinctive howls echo through the dense rainforest, and you may catch glimpses of curious faces peeking out from the treetops.

Next, immerse yourself in nature at the “Tunnel of Love,” a serene natural pool surrounded by mangroves. Wade into the warm, shallow waters, let your senses come alive with the symphony of chirping birds and the occasional calls of distant monkeys, and relax in this enchanting natural haven.

As the boat glides through narrow channels, you’ll arrive at Isla Mamey, a picture-perfect island with a pristine white sand beach. Grab your snorkel and dive into the crystal-clear waters to explore the vibrant coral reef just offshore. Palm trees provide ample shade, inviting you to unwind and soak in the gentle Caribbean breeze.

From Isla Mamey, it’s a short, scenic 10-minute boat ride to Isla Grande. This island paradise welcomes you with swaying palms, soft white sand, and a relaxed Caribbean vibe. Stroll along its charming footpaths, lined with pastel-colored cottages, or dive into the surrounding waters for snorkeling and scuba diving. Experience the local culture and cuisine, with fresh seafood served at a recommended oceanfront restaurant. Relax on the private beach, sip on a refreshing Balboa beer, or savor crispy patacones (fried plantains) as you soak up the island ambiance.

At around 4:00 PM, we’ll head back to Portobelo to uncover the rich history of this fascinating town. Known as “Puerto Bello” (the Beautiful Port) by Christopher Columbus in 1502, Portobelo was once a thriving hub for Spanish silver exports. Wander through its UNESCO-protected ruins and national park, exploring the remnants of ancient forts and historic buildings that tell stories of pirate raids and colonial treasure fleets.

From the infamous Sir Henry Morgan to Admiral Edward Vernon, Portobelo’s storied past comes to life as you walk its streets and imagine its former glory. Today, the town is a cultural gem, with a revival of Congo art, music, and dance. It’s also home to the vibrant Festival del Cristo Negro, a celebration of faith and tradition held every October.
