Isla Aroma San Blas – Island Overview
Isla Aroma, also known as Isla Asserya and sometimes referred to as Aroma Island, is a small Caribbean island in San Blas, Panama. Located within the autonomous region of Guna Yala, the island is approximately 15 minutes by boat from the Port of Cartí.
One of the island's main attractions is the large reef located directly in front of the beach. When sea conditions are suitable, guests can swim and snorkel in the clear Caribbean water without needing to travel to another island.
When you're not in the water, spend the day relaxing beneath the palm trees or join informal volleyball and soccer games on the island.
Its relatively short boat transfer also makes Isla Aroma appealing to travelers who want to stay overnight in the San Blas Islands without a long boat journey from the mainland.
San Blas Cabins on Isla Aroma
Isla Aroma offers three types of rustic San Blas Islands accommodation. The cabins vary considerably in privacy and comfort, so choose the category that best matches your expectations and budget.
Shared Cabin – Shared Bathroom & Sand Floor
The most economical accommodation is a larger traditional thatched cabin with approximately 6 to 8 twin beds. Beds include mosquito nets.
The cabin has a natural sand floor, and bathroom and shower facilities are shared with other guests. This is best suited to solo travelers, groups and budget-conscious visitors comfortable with shared accommodation.

Private Hut – Shared Bathroom & Sand Floor
For more privacy, choose one of the traditional private huts. These simple huts normally contain approximately 2 to 3 twin beds and have natural sand floors.
Bathroom and shower facilities are shared. This cabin category is available for bookings of two or more guests.

Private Cabin – Private Bathroom & Wood Floor
The most comfortable accommodation category on Isla Aroma is the private cabin with a wood floor and private ensuite bathroom.
This is the best choice for couples, families or travelers who want more privacy while still experiencing the rustic character of an overnight stay in the San Blas Islands. This category is available for bookings of two or more guests.
Current cabin prices and availability are displayed in the booking section of this page. We recommend using the live booking system rather than relying on fixed prices in the description, as rates can change.

Beach, Swimming & Snorkeling on Isla Aroma
One of the main reasons to choose Isla Aroma is the reef directly in front of the island. Clear Caribbean water makes the area attractive for swimming and snorkeling when weather and sea conditions permit.
Bring your own snorkeling equipment if snorkeling is an important part of your stay, as equipment availability on small islands can be limited.
As with all natural marine environments, water clarity, currents and marine-life sightings vary from day to day and cannot be guaranteed.

Meals on Isla Aroma
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included with your overnight accommodation.
Meals are freshly prepared in the local island kitchen. Typical lunches and dinners consist of fish or chicken served with rice, salad and plantains. Seafood depends on the local catch and availability.
Fresh lobster may be available as an optional meal upgrade for an additional charge. If you would like lobster, we recommend arranging it in advance when possible.
Drinks are not included in the standard accommodation rate. We also recommend bringing any special snacks or additional food you may want during your stay.

Getting to Isla Aroma from Panama City
Most guests begin their San Blas overnight stay from Panama City with an early-morning shared 4x4 transfer to the Port of Cartí.
The drive normally takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and crosses winding mountain roads before descending toward the Caribbean coast. Shared vehicles normally carry up to six guests.
At the Port of Cartí, you'll transfer to a local boat for the approximately 15-minute ride to Isla Aroma.
Depending on weather and sea conditions, the boat ride can be wet or bumpy. We strongly recommend protecting phones, cameras, passports and other valuables in a waterproof bag.
Roundtrip transportation from Playa Bonita is also available for an additional charge.

What to Expect from San Blas Islands Accommodation
A San Blas Islands accommodation experience is very different from staying at a conventional hotel or beach resort. Isla Aroma is intended for travelers who value nature, simplicity and cultural experience more than modern amenities.
Rustic Accommodation
There is no air conditioning. Electricity is limited and is generally available during evening and nighttime hours, approximately 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Electricity interruptions are possible.
There is no reliable Wi-Fi. A local mobile signal may work in some areas, but coverage and data service cannot be guaranteed.
Depending on the cabin category, accommodations may have a natural sand floor and shared bathroom or a wood floor and private bathroom.
Beds, linens and furnishings are simple and may show more wear than you would expect in a conventional hotel.
Bathrooms & Water
Shared bathrooms and showers are basic. The private cabin category includes its own bathroom.
Fresh water is a valuable and limited resource on small Caribbean islands. Water pressure and supply may therefore be inconsistent, and shower water can sometimes have a slight salt content.

Food
Meals are prepared locally and are simple rather than restaurant-style. Typical dishes include fish or chicken with rice, salad and plantains.
Food choices are naturally more limited than on the mainland, so travelers with very specific dietary preferences may wish to bring appropriate snacks.

Transportation
The journey involves a 2.5–3 hour drive on winding mountain roads followed by a small-boat transfer. Travelers prone to motion sickness should plan accordingly.
Boat transfers may occasionally stop at other islands to pick up or drop off guests.
Guna Culture
The San Blas Islands are part of Guna Yala, an autonomous Indigenous territory governed by the Guna people. Tourism services on the islands are operated within the local community.
Service is informal and should not be compared with conventional hotel hospitality. English may be limited, and schedules may be more flexible than travelers are accustomed to.
Patience, flexibility and respect for local traditions are important parts of the experience.
Nature & Environment
Weather in the Caribbean is unpredictable and rain can occur throughout the year. Normal rain does not automatically result in cancellations or refunds.
Sandflies and mosquitoes can occur, particularly during wetter and less windy periods, so insect repellent is strongly recommended.
Ocean currents occasionally carry natural material and plastic debris onto the beaches. The local community cleans regularly, but beach conditions can vary from one day to another.
Health & Safety
Medical facilities in the San Blas Islands are extremely limited. Serious medical problems may require transportation back toward the mainland or Panama City.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Bring enough of any required medication for your entire stay and additional supplies in case transportation is delayed.
A Different Kind of Caribbean Experience
An overnight stay in San Blas offers the chance to wake up on a small Caribbean island, swim in clear water, disconnect from everyday infrastructure and experience life in Guna Yala.
Travelers who arrive with realistic expectations, patience and an open mind are generally the ones who most enjoy an overnight stay in San Blas.
