At the Agua Clara Visitor Center, discover how the expanded Panama Canal accommodates enormous vessels. Enjoy views of the locks and Gatun Lake while your guide explains the importance of this international waterway.
Continue toward Fort San Lorenzo, crossing the Atlantic Bridge, or Puente Atlántico, along the way. The journey between Agua Clara and the fort takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions.
At the fort, explore historic stone fortifications, cannons and chambers with your guide. Take in the striking views of the Chagres River and Caribbean coast before returning to your Panama City lodging.
Visit the Agua Clara Locks
The Agua Clara Locks offer a fascinating perspective on the Panama Canal’s Atlantic side. From the observation area, look across Gatun Lake and the expanded locks, where large vessels move between the lake and the Caribbean entrance to the Canal.
Your guide helps explain the lock system and the engineering behind the expansion. Depending on operating conditions and the time available, you can also explore the visitor center’s interpretive attractions or its short ecological trail.
Ship movements follow the Canal’s operating schedule. A vessel passing through the locks during your visit cannot be guaranteed.

Explore Fort San Lorenzo
Overlooking the mouth of the Chagres River, Fort San Lorenzo once helped protect a strategic route across Panama. Its stone defenses, cannons and chambers reveal the importance of the Caribbean coast in the region’s colonial history.
Walk through the ruins with your guide and discover how the fort’s location helped defend the river entrance. The surrounding rainforest and sweeping coastal views make this a memorable setting for photographs.
