Isla Yansailadup, San Blas
ISLAND INFORMATION
- Isla Yansailadup, or Yani Island, is located about 35 minutes away from the main port and is in our opinion one of the most beautiful and versatile islands in San Blas. Featuring gorgeous white sand beaches, ocean swings, SUP rentals, newly built cabins and an excellent island chef preparing fresh meals, visitors enjoy spending their San Blas vacation here.
- In the heart of the Lemon Keys, Isla Yansailadup is surrounded by little islands and attractions, such as the Natural Pool right in front of its shores, Isla Perro with its sunken shipwreck and Isla Chichime.
- Guests can choose to stay in private bedrooms, private oceanfront cabins, or newly constructed Over-Water cabins. Bathrooms and showers are shared and a short walk away from your door.
- The island restaurant features gorgeous views of the ocean with spectacular sunsets. Breakfasts consist of fresh fruit and "Ojaldre", a tasty fried bread, similar to a doughnut without sugar. Lunch and Dinner meals consist of a choice of fresh fish or chicken with rice and salad. Vegetarian options are available.
- Please note that the beaches around Isla Yansailadup are very shallow and not ideal for swimming close to shore. To enjoy a proper swim, guests need to walk further out into the sea where the water gets deeper. While this makes the beach area safe and calm, it may not be the best choice for travelers looking for immediate deep-water swimming right off the sand.

Why Visit the San Blas Islands?
The San Blas Islands, known locally as Guna Yala, are a Caribbean archipelago off the northern coast of Panama. With hundreds of tropical islands, white-sand beaches and clear turquoise water, San Blas offers a very different experience from Panama's more developed beach destinations.
Our Tao Travel 365 team has been exploring the San Blas archipelago for more than 10 years, including extensive travel through the islands by sailboat. We have visited everything from popular stops such as Isla Perro and the Natural Pool to remote areas of the Holandeses Cays, giving us first-hand experience of the different islands, accommodations and ways to explore the region.
San Blas is not a luxury resort destination — and that is part of what makes it special. The islands are governed by the indigenous Guna people, development is limited, and many islands have only simple facilities. Travelers come here for the beaches, snorkeling, island hopping, Guna culture and the opportunity to experience one of the Caribbean's less-developed island regions.

Our Recommended San Blas Experiences
Catering to the needs and preferences of our guests, we offer everything from San Blas day tours and multi-day island-hopping adventures to San Blas island stays and private San Blas sailing charters.
Below are the experiences we recommend most often based on our first-hand knowledge of the islands and the type of trip each guest is looking for.

San Blas Day Tour from Panama City
Best for travelers who only have one day. Our San Blas Day Tour begins with an early-morning pickup in Panama City followed by the drive across the mountains to the Caribbean coast. From the port, guests travel by boat to three island stops, typically including Isla Perro and the Natural Pool.
It is a long but rewarding day: pickups begin around 5:00 AM and guests generally return to Panama City in the evening. For travelers with limited time, this is the easiest way to experience the beaches, snorkeling and island scenery of San Blas without staying overnight.
Stay Overnight on Isla Yansailadup
Best for travelers who want to slow down and spend a night on the islands. Isla Yansailadup is one of our favorite overnight options in the Lemon Cays and offers both over-water cabins and private rooms.
Staying overnight gives you much more time to enjoy the islands once the day-tour crowds have left, while still keeping you relatively close to the main port and popular island-hopping routes.
View Isla Yansailadup accommodation →
Multi-Day San Blas Island Hopping
Best for travelers who want to see more than the islands closest to the port. Our multi-day packages combine overnight stays with island hopping, giving you more time on the water and the opportunity to experience several different islands during one trip.
A two-day trip is a good introduction, while longer itineraries allow you to travel deeper into the archipelago and spend more time away from the busiest day-tour stops.

Private Sailing Charters in San Blas
Best for travelers looking for privacy and access to the more remote parts of San Blas. A private sailing charter allows you to travel beyond the islands normally reached on day tours and explore quieter areas of the archipelago at a much slower pace.
Our Lagoon 57 catamaran is captained by Charly and Luz and includes onboard accommodation, meals and access to remote islands that are difficult to reach by regular boat transfers.

What to Expect on a San Blas Tour
San Blas is one of the few Caribbean destinations where the experience is still relatively undeveloped and locally managed. Reaching the islands requires an early departure from Panama City, a drive through the mountains to the Caribbean coast, and then a boat transfer to the islands.
Travel logistics can feel less structured than in a conventional resort destination, and many island accommodations are intentionally simple. Depending on the island, you may find basic cabins, limited electricity, shared or simple private bathrooms, and few modern amenities.
From our experience, guests enjoy San Blas most when they arrive prepared for the simplicity of island life. The reward is access to white-sand beaches, clear Caribbean water, snorkeling, small Guna communities and islands that still feel far removed from mass tourism.

Best Islands and Places to Visit in San Blas
Isla Perro
Isla Perro is one of the most popular stops on San Blas day tours. Its main attraction is a shallow shipwreck just offshore, which has become a snorkeling site with tropical fish and coral life.
The Natural Pool
The Natural Pool is a shallow sandbank surrounded by clear Caribbean water. Boats often stop here between islands so guests can swim and stand waist-deep in the middle of the sea.
Holandeses Cays
The Holandeses Cays are among the more remote parts of the archipelago and are especially appealing for sailing, snorkeling and longer island-hopping trips. Reaching them generally requires more time than a standard day tour.
Lemon Cays
The Lemon Cays are home to several popular islands and overnight accommodations, including Isla Yansailadup. Their location makes them convenient for travelers who want a mix of island stays, snorkeling and short boat transfers.
Cambombia Island
Cambombia is one of the more secluded islands we have visited in San Blas and is generally reached on sailing itineraries or selected island-hopping trips rather than standard day tours.
Guna Culture and Traditions
Comprising one of the largest tribal groups in Panama, the Guna people work hard to protect their Comarca from unwanted westernization. Remember this as you travel through the region – be kind and respectful. We suggest that our guests make an effort to learn about the Guna way of life by interacting with the locals, starting with the driver picking them up from your hotel. Knowing even a few basic words will most likely be rewarded with an openhearted smile (“nuedi” is thank you, “igi benuga” is "How are you"). The Guna are also known to throw a good party: amongst many festivities are the 4-day “Flowering” ceremonies held for each girl transcending into puberty, the Nogagope, a traditional dance celebration on Isla Tigre, or the February 25 party celebrating the Guna Revolution of 1925.
Visitors interested in learning more about San Blas and Guna culture can find additional information from Panama's official tourism authority.
Despite centuries of struggle with larger cultures, the Guna have retained many of their ancient traditions, which also include the art of Mola making, the creation of colorful quilted panels with tiny stitching on many layers of fabric. Molas are considered to be an integral part of the Guna culture and represent an important part of their identity. Molas have also become popular among travelers who purchase these elaborate art pieces and use them as decor, framed on walls or sewn onto throw pillows.
Best Time to Visit San Blas
San Blas can be visited year-round, but the experience changes depending on the season. Temperatures remain warm throughout the year, while rainfall, wind and sea conditions vary.
December to April: Drier and Windier
December through April is generally the drier season and is also the most popular time to visit San Blas. There is typically more sunshine and less rainfall, but Caribbean trade winds can also make the sea rougher on some days.
May to November: Wetter but Often Calmer
May through November brings a greater chance of tropical showers, but rain often comes in shorter periods rather than lasting all day. This season can also bring calmer sea conditions, which can make boat trips, snorkeling and sailing particularly enjoyable.
There is no single “best” month for everyone. If sunshine is your priority, the dry season is generally preferable. If you prefer calmer seas and fewer visitors and don't mind occasional rain, the wetter months can be an excellent time to visit.
How to Prepare for a San Blas Tour
Be Prepared for Simple Island Facilities
One of the most important things to understand before visiting San Blas is that most island accommodations are very basic compared with conventional hotels. Depending on the island, cabins may have wood or sand floors, mosquito nets, fans and either private or shared bathrooms.
Electricity and fresh water are limited on many islands. Some properties generate their own electricity and pump or transport fresh water for bathrooms and showers, so guests should use both conservatively.
We often describe overnight stays in San Blas as somewhat “camping-like.” Travelers who arrive expecting simple facilities generally enjoy the experience much more than those expecting resort standards.
Tao Travel 365 organizes the transportation and island logistics, and we provide guests with detailed information before departure so they know what to expect and how to prepare.

What to Pack for San Blas
You don't need much for San Blas, but there are a few things we strongly recommend bringing:
- Original passport – visitors pass through the entrance checkpoint into the autonomous Guna Yala territory.
- Cash – for the Guna Yala entrance fee, additional drinks, souvenirs and other purchases on the islands.
- Swimsuit and light clothing – T-shirts, shorts and lightweight clothing are generally all you'll need.
- Biodegradable sunscreen, hat and sunglasses – the tropical sun can be intense.
- Insect repellent – particularly useful for sandflies and mosquitoes.
- Towel and toiletries – especially when staying overnight.
- Motion-sickness medication – recommended if you are sensitive to winding mountain roads or boat travel.
- Small bag or backpack – luggage space in shared 4x4 vehicles and boats is limited, so pack as lightly as possible.
Most hotels in Panama City can store larger luggage while you visit San Blas, making it easier to travel to the islands with only what you need.
Health and Safety in San Blas
San Blas is remote, and medical facilities on the islands are limited. Travelers should bring any medication they may need and keep in mind that reaching medical care can take considerably longer than it would in Panama City.
The most common practical concerns are strong tropical sun, dehydration, mosquitoes and sandflies, motion sickness on the mountain road or boat ride, and limited access to fresh drinking water. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent and any motion-sickness medication you normally use, and drink bottled or purified water.
Sea and weather conditions can change, so always follow the instructions of your driver, boat captain and local Guna guides.
Travelers can also review the CDC’s current health recommendations for Panama before visiting San Blas.
San Blas Tours FAQ
Can you visit San Blas on a day trip from Panama City?
Yes. A San Blas day tour from Panama City is possible and is one of the most popular ways to visit the islands. Pickup is usually very early in the morning, followed by a 2.5 to 3-hour drive to the Caribbean coast and a boat ride to the islands. Expect a long day, with return to Panama City generally in the evening.
How far is San Blas from Panama City?
The drive from Panama City to the San Blas port generally takes around 2.5 to 3 hours each way. The route crosses the mountains of Guna Yala and includes steep and winding sections, which is why 4x4 vehicles are normally used.
How long is the boat ride to the San Blas Islands?
Boat-transfer time depends on the islands included in your trip. As a general guide:
- Day-tour islands: approximately 20–30 minutes
- Many island accommodations: approximately 15–45 minutes
- Sailing-charter meeting points: approximately 30–60 minutes
More remote islands and cays can require considerably longer boat journeys.
Do I need a passport to visit San Blas?
Yes. Bring your original passport when traveling to San Blas. Visitors pass through a checkpoint when entering the autonomous Guna Yala territory, and identification requirements are enforced during the journey.
When is the best time to visit San Blas?
San Blas can be visited year-round. December through April is generally drier but can also be windier, with rougher sea conditions on some days. May through November has a greater chance of rain but can bring calmer seas and fewer visitors. The best time depends on whether you prioritize drier weather or calmer conditions on the water.
How many days do you need in San Blas?
If your schedule allows, we recommend spending at least one night in San Blas rather than visiting only for the day. Two or three days gives you more time to experience island life, visit several islands and enjoy San Blas after the day-tour boats have departed. Travelers with limited time can still experience the islands on a day tour from Panama City.
Can you stay overnight in San Blas?
Yes. Several islands offer cabins and rooms ranging from very simple shared-facility accommodations to private cabins with bathrooms. Standards are generally much more basic than conventional hotels, so visitors should come prepared for a rustic island experience.
Is there electricity and Wi-Fi in San Blas?
It depends on the island. Electricity is limited on many islands and may be supplied by solar panels or generators rather than a continuous electrical grid. Wi-Fi is uncommon, although mobile-phone reception is available in some parts of the archipelago. Travelers should not depend on having reliable internet access during their stay.
Is there cell phone service in San Blas?
Mobile reception varies considerably depending on the island and your Panamanian carrier. Some areas have usable cellular service while more remote parts of the archipelago may have weak or no signal. We recommend downloading anything important before leaving Panama City.
Can I pay by credit card in San Blas?
Do not rely on credit cards while in San Blas. Most purchases on the islands are made in cash, and electronic payment options are limited or unavailable. Bring enough cash for entrance fees, additional drinks, souvenirs and other personal expenses.
How much cash should I bring to San Blas?
All visitors must pay the $22 Guna Yala entrance fee in cash when entering the autonomous territory. We also recommend bringing additional cash for drinks, souvenirs and other personal purchases. ATMs are not available on the islands and electronic payment options are very limited.
How many passengers are in the shared transportation to San Blas?
Shared transportation normally uses 4x4 SUVs such as Toyota Fortuners or similar vehicles. These can carry up to six passengers, typically with one passenger in the front, three in the middle row and two in the rear row.
Is the road from Panama City to San Blas difficult?
The road into Guna Yala crosses steep, winding mountain terrain. Although the road is paved, the journey can feel uncomfortable for travelers who are sensitive to motion sickness. We recommend taking appropriate motion-sickness medication before departure if winding roads normally affect you.
What should I bring on a San Blas tour?
Bring your original passport, $22 in cash for the Guna Yala entrance fee, additional cash for personal expenses, a swimsuit, lightweight clothing, sunscreen, hat, insect repellent and a towel. Overnight guests should also bring personal toiletries and pack lightly because luggage space in the 4x4 vehicles and boats is limited.
Is San Blas worth visiting?
Yes. San Blas is particularly worthwhile for travelers looking for undeveloped Caribbean islands, clear turquoise water, snorkeling and an experience very different from Panama's more developed beach destinations. The accommodations and infrastructure are generally basic, so San Blas is best suited to travelers who value the natural setting, island life and Guna culture more than luxury.
Can I visit San Blas without a tour?
Traveling independently to San Blas is possible, but the logistics are more complicated than visiting most destinations in Panama. You will need to arrange your own 4x4 transportation through the Guna Yala checkpoint to the Caribbean coast, coordinate a boat transfer from the port, and make separate arrangements with the islands you plan to visit.
Once you add up the cost of private or shared transportation, boat transfers, island entrance fees and meals, traveling independently often costs almost the same as booking an organized San Blas tour. For most visitors, a tour is therefore considerably easier and offers better value, since the transportation, boat transfers and island logistics are coordinated for you.
What is included in a San Blas tour?
Inclusions depend on the tour you choose. Most of our San Blas tours include transportation between Panama City and the port, boat transportation between the islands and lunch. Multi-day packages can also include accommodation and additional meals. Always check the individual tour page for the exact inclusions and exclusions.
How early do San Blas tours leave Panama City?
Most day tours and shared transfers depart very early in the morning, with hotel pickups generally beginning around 5:00 AM. The early departure is necessary because the drive to the San Blas port takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and allows travelers to maximize their time on the islands.
What time do San Blas day tours return to Panama City?
Return times vary depending on traffic, weather and boat conditions, but guests generally return to Panama City in the evening. We recommend avoiding flights or other time-sensitive commitments on the same evening as your San Blas tour because exact return times cannot be guaranteed.
Are San Blas tours suitable for children?
Yes, children can visit San Blas, but parents should consider the early departure, long drive, boat transfers, tropical heat and basic island facilities. Families with young children may find an overnight stay more comfortable than completing the entire journey from Panama City and back in a single day.
Can I bring luggage to San Blas?
Yes, but luggage space is limited in the shared 4x4 vehicles and boats. We strongly recommend bringing only a small backpack or overnight bag and leaving larger suitcases at your hotel in Panama City whenever possible.
What happens if the weather is bad?
San Blas has a tropical Caribbean climate, so weather and sea conditions can change quickly. Rain alone does not necessarily mean that a tour will be canceled. If conditions become unsafe for boat travel, local captains and operators may modify the itinerary or cancel transportation for safety reasons.
What is the best San Blas tour from Panama City?
For first-time visitors with only one day available, we generally recommend our San Blas Day Tour, which combines several island stops, snorkeling and some of the best-known attractions in San Blas, including Isla Perro and the Natural Pool.
Travelers with two or more days should consider a multi-day San Blas tour. Staying overnight gives you considerably more time in the archipelago and allows you to experience the islands after most day-trip visitors have returned to Panama City.
Ready to Explore the San Blas Islands?
Whether you have just one day or several nights, there is a San Blas experience for almost every itinerary. Visit the islands on a day trip from Panama City, stay overnight on a Guna island, explore several islands on a multi-day adventure, or travel deeper into the archipelago aboard a private sailing charter.
Not sure which option is right for you? Our team has been exploring San Blas for more than 10 years and can help you choose the experience that best fits your schedule, travel style and budget.
